# Collations

Hi everyone

Would appreciate any advice about collations options on mySQL.

By default i try to use utf8\_general\_ci but my development system seems stuck on latin1\_swedish\_ci! if i change this with phpmyadmin it only seems to change the default settings not the actual columns.

Is there an issue if the backup is a different collation to the destination database, is this dangerous? What about different collations for repository servers? Are there any performance differences between collations?Are there any tools for converting a collation to a different type.
