I am interested in contributing but do not know quite how I join?
The FAQ says contact owners who will add you via admin pages.
The only owner I see is goldcougar83 who is not responding to email.
Shall I just download the source, have a look, then propose some project or activity?

Downloading the source is a good start.
It’s a fresh open source project, so procedures are not 100% setup yet, but in general, to gain commit access, you first have to be activly involved in the project, submitting patches etc. so the project owners can determine if it’s save to give you commit access.
