BillB:
Thanks again Kazar.
No problem, it’s nice to have noticed a couple of questions this week that I’m actually qualified to answer, lol. (I’ve been much more a project manager and consultant than a geek these past few years.)
You would think that this is such a change that it would appear in the “What’s new in 4.0” stuff.
Actually, the instructions for starting ASA as a service on Windows have not changed since I started “playing” with Servoy in the 2.2 days. Perhaps in the past you have done this on Mac or Linux where you export the service, and stop and start it, from the command line?
If anything, working with ASA on the back end has gotten much easier in Servoy 4.x because you can now create new Sybase db’s right in Eclipse. In versions prior to 4.0 one had to use Sybase Central to create db’s as well as to create the service on Windows …
I wonder how other new users will tackle this issue? I suppose either they’ll post here, bug the Servoy support team, or unfortunately, maybe give up because things don’t work as documented.
The information does exist on the Developer FAQs page (which actually needs updating because Sybase Central is no longer required for creating new databases). But I agree and think it would be much better to repeat the info in the docs, where the absence of the info leaves one thinking, “What did I miss? Where do I find Sybase Central in these folders Servoy installed?”
One of the huge plusses of using Servoy is the responsiveness of the entire company. I’ll forward the suggestion to add a sentence or two explaining that Sybase Central is a separate product from Sybase, that it’s part of the software titled SQL Anywhere, and where to get it.
I had the same confusion when I started with Servoy and I nicknamed this phantom product referred to: “SQL Nowhere”.
I’ll keep reading. Maybe “it’s in there somewhere”.
Nope, I did a search across all the 4.0 docs and they do not answer the question, “what is Sybase Central and why can’t I find it in my Programs folder?”
But keep reading anyway for all the important stuff that -is- there.
And take advantage of these resources where you’ll find more goodies.
- Partnering and Developing with Servoy
- the Developer FAQ on the main site
- Adrian McGilly’s Servoy Beginner’s Handbook (which has a really clear brief section, in the free-content portion of his book, that explains about SQL Anywhere)
- Servoy Magazine published by Data Mosaic, with contributions from many in the community, and sporting links to various blogs and additional resources
Most of all, don’t hesitate to post to the forums… that’s the best way to get to know who your colleagues are, and to collectively build up a “knowledge base” of sorts. Which is another key resource as you learn and advance: these forums. A search in the google field at the top of the page on “sybase central” turned up 799 hits…
Happy New Year to all the Servoy community.
You too, Bill. Some day (after you get over these initial bumps in the road) I’d love to hear your experience with Servoy v. Alpha5 v. FileMaker.
