Servoy R2 2.0 RC7 available

Postby Jan Aleman » Tue Feb 24, 2004 2:36 pm

We announce the immediate availability of Servoy 2.0RC7.

NOTE: this is a Release Candidate, use with caution and make BACKUPS before you start.

Before installing: If you use Mac OS X or Linux have a look at the special note mentioned with the RC2 announcement:
http://forum.servoy.com/viewtopic.php?t=1136

Make a backup of your current Servoy installation directory. If you don't use Firebird as your repository database also make a backup of the database you use as a repository database server.

Do not use in production until you have verified that it works properly with test data.

Servoy 2.0RC7 is only available via autoupdate. You need to have Servoy 2.0b6 or later to autoupdate. This version does not yet contain the new database engine. If you don't get the autoupdate notification edit your servoy.properties file, make sure the last line in it reads:
Code: Select all
wantsBetaCodeNotifies=true

I have downloaded the update twice now but the splash still shows rc6.

I have noticed that some plugins have the date of today now but the lib dir doesn't hold any files later than feb 14.

No jars with a directory in the naming in the servoy root either...

OS X 10.3.2...

Newbie here. I was able to get to rc7 after a few cycles of download and restart. Stuff is scattered in the Servoy directory, as others have experienced, but I can put it in the right places. My question: Jan's post says to read the RC2 release notes ... went there, and it says to make sure to download the "attached" servoy_developer.jar. I've looked all over that page for a while now, and I cannot find anything "attached" nor anything that looks downloadable (never mind wondering why we'd want an RC2 blob when updating to RC7). Does anyone know where to get that, or if we indeed need it? If that wasn't the part of the RC2 announcement that I was supposed to pay attention to, what was?

Duh. thanks!

Hi Anne,

Here's the release naming conventions:

Servoy # BETA #

This is a release where most of the stuff works - and we're working on implementing fixes/suggestions from forum

Servoy RC (Release Candidate) #

This is where we are getting set to release the product - and have either been notified of bugs - or there has been a big outcry from the list on a certain feature that "needs" to be in there. In ALL CASES a "RC" release is LATER than a "BETA" release. :-)

You can ususally download the latest BETA (OR RC) at: http://developer.servoy.com ("downloads" link - click on "Latest Beta" section). You can do this to get a fresh install of 2.0RC3. In this release (2.0RC3...2.0RC7) - we have made the updates ONLY available via "auto-update" - there are no new installers for 2.0RC3...2.0RC7. The reason for this is because we're getting ready to change out the default database backend - but we want people to still use whatever they've created in the meantime.

SO... here are instructions for getting to Servoy 2.0RC7:

1) Download the "base" BETA release at http://developer.servoy.com - THIS SHOULD BE 2.0RC3;

2) Once installed - launch it (so it can do the first time use stuff);

3) When prompted to auto-update - SAY OK to the update.

4) When it's done setting up the first time, and you get the confirmation message that a new build has been downloaded - EXIT Servoy and re-launch.

You should see "RC 7" in the splash on launch.

Cheers,

thanks, Bob!

... and that "attached" servoy_developer.jar file ... where in the forum do I click to download it (re: instructions in Jan's original post on this thread to go see the rc2 insructions, which in turn say we need this file) ... ?

Thanks Bert, still need answer to first question.

Postby Anne Verrinder » Wed Feb 25, 2004 4:26 am

I followed your link to Harry's conversation, and see that he had upgrade issues, but worked them out. I am already upgraded to RC7 - it took a few cycles of download/restart before it stopped announcing upgrades, but I'm good on that. Harry mentions developer_servoy.jar but doesn't ask how to get it, so I'm assuming it's clear to everyone but me how one downloads this file via a forum message. I *didn't* download it, since I couldn't find it, but did experience what Harry did: several cyles of update/restart before I saw RC7.

Jan's original post (1452) on RC7 said, in effect, "go see RC2 message". RC2 message, with a link to http://forum.servoy.com/viewtopic.php?t=1136. I went to 1136, and it said "download the attached servoy_developer.jar and place it in your servoy installation directory". I have to assume this process was not part of the normal auto-update, or why would it have been a special note/instruction?

I've looked a third time now, and am still at a loss. What i need to know, I think is: when someone tells you there's something attached to a forum message, exactly where does one click on their message to download whatever is attached. Or, did anyone else using OS X download this file? Could some kind soul just email it to me? annev@eclipse.net.

It looks like my upgrade didn't like my servoy.properties file. In fact. After upgrade it wipped it out. :(

Luckily, I use an editor that creates .bak files and I had a backup. Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else had their properties emptied.

In order to see any files for download you have to actually be logged in. I just went to the link while logged in and the file is there to be downloaded.

The file is located immediately following the fix list. I did download and install it when I upgraded to RC2. Unfortunately I can't attach a screen shot here. But the download count indicates that only 48 people downloaded it.

Whether servoy_developer.jar is needed for updates after RC2 (if it has already been used to upgrade from to RC2), I doubt it, but I can't speak authoritatively to that. I know that I haven't redownloaded it and things on my end are running fine (so far :D ).

Going from RC6 to RC7 on my PB G4/667 has been smooth. It required only one update. I know that I happened to repair permissions just prior to updating (part of my regular maintenance routine). Perhaps this helped. But if you are on Windows, this shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks for the tip about being logged in -- it works. (And thanks for figuring out I hadn't done the most basic essential - good troubleshooting!).

Seems to be consensus that we didn't need that file in order to update to RC7, so wondering why Jan's RC7 announcement tells us to be sure to go over to the RC2 announcement before updating to RC7. Was there anything over there that we *were* supposed to pay attention to.

I guess there's such a thing as following instructions too carefully. :oops:

Thanks to everyone for the hand-holding.

Hi Anne,

The reason for Jan directing developers to that original link was because the upgrade process changed from a 'manual download and run the upgrade yourself' scenario to Servoy automatically sensing that there was a download available and giving you the option of automatically upgrading to that RC version.

Because this change happened 'between' releases the 'servoy_developer.jar' file which some people had did not handle the auto update correctly and so you had to go get the newer version of the 'servoy_developer.jar' file which fixed the issue !

This appears to happen if you restart Servoy Developer before it has entirely shutdown. When you close Servoy it writes away the servoy.properties file, if you restart it while it's still shutting down (even though your UI is gone it might still be in the process of terminating) then your properties file could get overwritten. We've fixed this in RC7, which means that it can still occurr in upgrading from rc6 to rc7 but shouldnt happen anymore in future versions.

If, as the recommendations mention, you have made a backup of your Servoy directory putting back your old servoy.properties file will fix the issue.
