Best Methods for Creating Servoy Study Buddies?

Postby Dr John Pollard » Sun May 29, 2005 2:24 am

I'd like to know if anyone has specific adice on the fundamentals of sharing servoy development with another person.

I'm trying to set up a study buddy situation with a friend of mine who knows javascript but has never heard of Servoy.

Here's what I've done so far.

I built a solution, (I don't know if I'm supposed to make my own server
or use the CRM one, or whatever, but I just used one that was there. I
would like to have my own, but not sure how that works. )

and then I built the forms and the attributes, etc. and then I tried
for an hour or so to get my filemaker text tab export into the servoy
solution, and then I couldn't.

So I exported the solution from the Repository, and I sent this guy the
file, the data, to import, and then he's supposed to be smart with
JavaScript and be able to figure out how to

1. import the file from the registry
2. how to get the data in.
3. Add some neat features and code to the template and then send it
back to me.

Do you think it will work? I don't. He's going to give up way before me.

There must be some best practices. I couldn't even get the data in.

Thus why I need a study buddy,

Thanks to members for any insights or experiences, gotchas.

Dr. John.

First of all you can combine step 1 and 2 since you can export a solution with sample data (up to 10,000 rows per table).

Secondly, if you want a study buddy then he/she still has to have some knowledge how Servoy works.
Javascript is just the script language Servoy uses. Your buddy still needs to know the SOM (Servoy Object Model).
The same way a java-scripter needs to know the DOM (Document Object Model) when using Javascript in a web page.

Ofcourse the best way would be if you both could connect to the same server and look at the same solution and work on it simultaneously. But that is planned for a future version of Servoy.

So right now you are forced to take this path of exporting and importing.

I recommend that you both first carefully review the Servoy users manuals. A lot of effort has been put into clearly documenting Servoy. You can download the manuals free in PDF format or you can purchase them in book form. My preference is to read them in book form. The money you pay for the books will also support future documentation.

The sample crm solution can be very helpful when learning the basics. Also, be sure to view the many excellent examples at www.servoymagazine.com.

Sharing a solution at the outset might be more confusing than it is helpful. However, once you begin to understand the basics, one approach to jointly developing a solution is to use Servoy's new "modules" feature. Be sure to see Bob Cusick's excellent artical on Servoy "modules" at:

Also, do not hesistate to ask questions at this forum. We all remember what it was like in the early stages of learning Servoy. We will be glad to help you. Think of us all as being your "study buddies"!
