Three enhancements for the Method Editor

Postby kazar » Tue Dec 12, 2006 9:56 pm

While working closely with a seasoned colleague on a project over the past couple of weeks, we came across the Wish for these three enhancements to the method editor that at least the two of us agreed would be nice enhancements to the method editor:

SHOW CURSOR POSITION IN THE STATUS BAR:
We are given an error message telling us something is wrong on line 23, position 151. The choice is either to estimate with the eyeball where position 151 might be, or to actually count off 151 characters from the beginning of that line, or to copy the method and paste it into a text editor (like BBedit) that already has the feature -- it shows the cursor coordinates in the status bar.

SHOW NAMED TABS IN THE ELEMENTS NODE
So we can give tabs (as well as the overall tab panel) names. And we can address those tabs as objects with the getTabNameAt(index#) function. Yet when we use that function, if we wish to test what is returned against the actual names of tabs, we need to click on the objects in the form to see their names. Please add named tabs to the elements node (unless it's already there somewhere and both of us are simply unaware & not seeing it)

SHOW ALL COLUMN PROPERTIES IN SELECTEDRECORD

If we hover over a column in this part of the tree, we can see that it is - for example - an integer, but not that it autoenters 0. Or that it is Text and is a 50-char column, but not that it looks up customer.current_status. And we cannot get to the Define Dataproviders dialog from the editor.

So if we need to refresh our memory on the exact nature of the column's properties while writing a method, we must click on the main solution in the design window, open the modal Define Dataproviders dialog, memorize the nature of any autoenter options, perhaps chanting them repeatedly to ourselves so as not to forget them while we close DD, switch back to the editor, and then continue coding. I hate to be the one to say it, but this reminds me much too much of this! (from the blog of a friend & colleague, full blog post here)

Since the column properties are already summarized in the list of columns in DD, it would be nice to also see that IDE object within the tooltip & info in the status area when visiting the selectedrecord node.

all "IMO" of course,
