Preference to disable warning for column names > 30 chars

Postby SteveInLA » Sat Jan 06, 2007 12:34 am

Since a column name longer than 30 characters is only an issue for some databases, can we have a preference to disable the red highlight of such columns in the Define Dataproviders window in Servoy 3.1? I am afraid that an issue that does apply to my database will be overlooked now.

Thanks,
Steve In LA

Can you explain a bit more, just out of curiousity?

Though I am pretty good about these sort of things, should I happen to give a column a name that conflicts with a reserved column name, in the past, it would highlight red. Now, any column that has a name longer than 30 characters also highlights red. I use MS SQL exclusively and don't have to be concerned about column name lengths, so the red highlights of columns with long names is irritating.

Aha, I understand that. Maybe it is even better in that case to simply use another color.

I am for the changing of this behavior, too. Marcels proposal with another colour would be a good solution in the developer. But with this solution the log entry on the server is stille there. If I can choose, I'm for a preference setting to disable this warning, too.

Or maybe ask the guys to give it another 'status' in the logging. I don't know what they actually are but it could be made 'warning' instead of 'error'...

The reason I don't really like making it an option is that I think it is even helpful when it is not yet of interest but you never know for the future...

We will change it to orange (which is a more appropriate color for warnings) and address filtering in eclipse version.

Hi Jan

Thanks for this solution, I am happy with your careful colour choosing. Colours are great and intuitively useful, if they are handled in a consistent way.

Best regards, Robert
