Use Servoy on Mac OS X? We'd like to hear about it!

Postby david_jonker » Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:18 pm

As we get closer to releasing SQL Anywhere for Intel-based Mac OS X machines, we'd like to get an idea of who is using Servoy & SQL Anywhere on Mac OS X ... and in particular Intel-based Mac OS X machines.

Please post your comments to the forum ... or email me at djonker_AT_sybase.com if you're feeling shy :-)

Thanks!

Score 1 :-)

PS I was able to connect using Sybase Central using JConnect when you posted the tip, but I cannot make it work anymore... Very strange.

That is strange :-/ It'll definitely be solved in the next
release.

How are you using Servoy on Mac OS X?

That's why I didn't write about that: I can wait till new release is out :-)

What do you mean with "how"? If I like it or not? :-)
If so, I like it very much (after moving to Intel processor: since I'm working with laptops, my previous machine was a G4, definitely too slow to develop with).

At the moment, the only speed difference between mac and pc is related to Sybase: the startup under OSX is 2/3 times slower than under win. I guess this also will be solved with the new release...;-)

Hey Ric,

What kind of applications have you deployed onto the Mac?
Or are you just using it for development purposes?

Hi David,

I develop and use everything with OS X including Servoy, Sybase iAnywhere.

The only exception is Sybase Central. When I install it it interferes for whatever reason with my Macromedia MX2004 Suite. This relates back to several tests on my PowerBoo. I have not tested it anymore on my MacBook (and will not test until you confirm it runs since I really need to install stuff all over when it fails).

No, I also deployed on Mac.
Actually, my personal Servoy record is held by a solution hosted on a XServe G5 machine. Not a single problem (after finding out how to start automatically Servoy and Sybase) in 2 years.

More or less, half of my Servoy customers are on Mac platform (advertising agencies, dentists, graphic designers etc).

Hi David

I'm another convert from Windows laptops to Intel MacBook Pro - superb machine. Used for development with Servoy/MySQL - primarily because tools like Navicat are just easier to use when creating/working on back-end databases.

However all the production Servers I deal with are Windows - even in companies where most of the Client computers are Mac.

I do some development on a MacIntel .. but as to deployments out in the real world I find that the present reality is that not many Mac-based organizations have replaced much if any of their technology, esp. the more expensive components such as XServes, with MacIntel.

But that is "a yet" -- I'm sure that since we're coming up on a year since the introduction of MacIntels we will see this change more and more and there will definitely be a demand for upgrade versions that run on that platform.

As for what marketplaces I find have a higher than usual percentage of Mac servers (I'm imagining the client platform is irrelevant to your question) ...
education, both K-12 and higher ed., often have Mac servers or are even Mac-centric.

Also, I've noticed not from my personal experience as a developer but from reading and from taking note of what platform is in use when I watch certain television shows: for some reason many scientific research groups use Macs (not familiar enough with why to even venture a guess!) ... I've noticed Macs at use for the areas of biology, chemistry, aerospace, and other branches of science. But I've not done development for these industries nor have any clue whether they are using ASA/Sybase Central, nor what server platform (as opposed to desktop platform) may be in use ... so now I've wandered off-topic and will stop here!

kazar

PS: One more thing -- it will indeed be interesting to watch the acceptance rate of Longhorn and also whether MS has indeed solved the security problems on their platform. If expensive security issues persist post-Longhorn/Vista, and as more and more business-oriented services such as group calendaring are added into the Mac server platform with Leopard and future versions (and more sophisticated GUI keeps evolving for Linux) ... perhaps we might see a noticeable shift from Win to Mac (and linux servers) in the foreseeable future.

Oh yes, add to the list of industries that favor Macs: advertising (as Ric has noted), and here in NYC the very busy and lucrative "creative services" firms.

I have used Servoy with SQL Anywhere and MySQL on MacTel macs extensively. To date I have found that the MySQL repository version seemed a lot faster both at start up and in operation. MySQL also benefited from Navicat which was handy because on the flip side it managed to corrupt its self !!! SQL Anywhere seems to be both robust and well respected by the key players ie Jan Aleman etc so deserves more investigation.

Its my intention to run Servoy and a "database" which would almost certainly have been MySQL due to my familiarity with it, on two different MacTel Xserve's My understanding, which could be wrong, is that in order to do this sort of configuration with SQL Anywhere I would need a fairly expensive additional license ($3495) which on top of a CPU license for Servoy make it a very costly additional consideration.

On the subject of MySQL corruption this presented by stopping the web client displaying correctly ie lost the css formatting in both Firefox and Nightly - I have also had SyBase corrupt its self in the past and had a lot more difficulty recovering from the situation - so perhaps I am bias!

Not sure that helps - but by all means contact me direct if you want any further info.

Hi David

We use Servoy on Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server.
- Mac OS X Hardware is mixed Intel and PPC
- Mac OS X Server Hardware is either an Xserve (PPC) and a G5 (PPC).

If I understand you correctly as long as we have PPC servers we can't use SQL Anywhere 10!? Which is quite bad as this will be the case for a while. So I really would like to have SQL Anywhere on PPC.

Best regards, Robert

PS: Does there a GIS enhancement for SQL Anywhere exist or is one planned for the foreseeable future (as Spatial Query Server for ASE or PostGIS for PostgreSQL)?

Best regards, Robert

FYI - New Guy at Sybase

Postby BDuncan » Thu Mar 15, 2007 10:39 pm

Hello all - just an FYI - David Jonker is no longer working at Sybase.

I will ping their marketing department and see if a new person is taking his place on the forum.

Hi Brenda,

Sorry to hear that David Jonker is no longer with them as he was pretty good about keeping up with all things Servoy. What about trying to get Jose Ramos involved? He seemed pretty keen and also understands the Mac issues of Servoy, ASA 9 and ASA 10.

With ASA being the default Servoy installation and from a very unscientific gut feeling/sampling at Servoy World, I would bet that more than half of all Servoy work is done using ASA. With that being the case, I think it would be in their interest to have someone assigned to monitoring the database part of the forum at least and perhaps setting up specialist Sybase webinars for Servoy users (kind of junior DBA-stuff like how to back up your database, increase page sizes, migrating to 10 etc. as well as possible extra sales to developers of their other tools like Powerbuilder).

Gordon, could you elaborate on this:
MySQL also benefited from Navicat which was handy because on the flip side it managed to corrupt its self !!!
e.g. what corrupted itself?

I have been using MySQL and Navicat and have been super happy with both, so far. I hope there are not dangers lurking within...
