Servoy 3.1.3 Documentation is now avaliable

Postby mnorman » Mon Mar 05, 2007 6:33 pm

The Servoy 3.1 (3.1.3) Documentation is now available.

The Servoy 3.1 Documentation has been expanded by almost 100 pages to
include: What's New chapters in all books; a Servoy 3.x icon that indicates
which content is new throughout each of the Servoy 3.x books; new
features and functions added to the already large built-in Servoy library of functions;
and existing Servoy functions that have been changed either in definition,
sample code, syntax or enhanced functionality.

Over 150 screenshots have been added or upgraded in the Servoy 3.1
Documentation. 100 index entries have been added or modified.

By developer request, the Servoy 3.1 Online Help Navigator is now
resolution independent - meaning that the online Servoy Help will display
font sizing properly regardless of monitor resolution; the Servoy
Documentation PDF files - available for free download - are listed on the
Servoy site with their Servoy release number; and older versions of the
Servoy Documentation PDF files are now also available.

A list of enhancements and changes are included in detail at the end
of this announcement - separately for each Servoy book by chapter
and section.

Servoy provides documentation in three formats:

Servoy Books
Servoy Downloadable PDF Files
Servoy Online Help Navigator

Servoy 3.1 Books

The following Servoy 3.1 Books can be purchased - either separately or
as a 4-set bundle - from the online Servoy Store:

Servoy 3.1 Developer User's Guide [ info ]
Servoy 3.1 Developer Reference Guide [ info ]
Servoy 3.1 Client User's Guide [ info ]
Servoy 3.1 Server Administrator's Guide [ info ]

For more detail about any of the Servoy 3.1 Books in the online Servoy Store:

1. Click the Servoy Store link.
2. Scroll down to the "Books" section in the Servoy Store.
3. You will see an information button [ i ] located to the left of each
Servoy 3.0 Book title.
4. Click the information button [ i ] for the Servoy 3.1 Book you
are interested in.

If you find the Servoy 3.1 documentation helpful in developing your
solutions, please consider purchasing one or more of the Servoy 3.1
Books. Your purchases help to pay for the cost of writing and improving
Servoy's documentation - now over 2100 pages with screenshots
and examples - as well as being able to currently provide all of the
Servoy documentation in PDF format for you to download free of charge.

Servoy 3.1 PDF Files

The Servoy 3.1 Documentation PDF files are available for download.

1. Choose the online Servoy/ Developers/Documentation/Servoy PDF Documentation link
to view the list of Servoy 3.1 Documentation files.

2. Click the link for the title of the Servoy Documentation file you wish
to download.

NOTE: Older 2.2.x Servoy Documentation PDF files can also be
downloaded - free of charge.

Servoy 3.1 Online Help Navigator

The Servoy Developer 3.1 Help Navigator
To download the new Servoy Developer 3.1 Help Navigator:

1. Exit/Quit Servoy Developer.
(You can skip this step if Servoy Developer is not open)

2. Open the Servoy<install directory>/docs/developer_manual directory.

3. Delete the entire developer_manual directory.
(If you have just installed a full version of Servoy 3.1, you can skip
this step.)

IMPORTANT: DO DELETE the developer_manual directory/folder.

4. Launch Servoy Developer.

5. Choose the Servoy menu item Help > Help (F1).

6. In the Documentation dialog that appears, Press "OK" to start
the download.

NOTE: You may need to wait a few minutes to complete the download.
Be patient since the Servoy 3.1 Help download is fairly large (19MB).
Once the Help download is complete, you will be able to access the
Servoy 3.1 Help Navigator by choosing Help (F1) from the Help menu.

7. Once the download is complete, the Servoy Help Navigator will open.

The Servoy Client 3.1 Help Navigator
Included as part of the Servoy installation and made available when
deploying to Servoy Clients.

1. Choose Help > Help (F1) to open the Servoy Client 3.1
Help Navigator.

The Servoy Server 3.1 documentation
Included as a PDF file when Servoy 3.1 is installed. The
ServoyServerManual.pdf file is located in the
Servoy<install directory>/docs directory.

1. Open the ServoyServerManual.pdf file.

2. Due to the large size of the Servoy Server 3.1 documentation, you will
need to click the link in the open PDF document to download the actual
Servoy Server PDF file. The download may take a few minutes, since the
size of the Servoy Server PDF file is almost 20MB.

NOTE: If you cannot locate the ServoyServerManual.pdf file
(due to a small bug in Servoy 3.1), go to: Servoy/ Developers/Documentation/Servoy PDF Documentation
to download the Servoy 3.1 Server Administrator's Guide PDF file.

-----------------

The Servoy 3.1 Developer Help Navigator combines
the information from the Servoy Developer User's Guide and
Servoy Developer Reference Guide into one Online Servoy Help
Navigator file.

To open the Servoy 3.1 Help Navigator:

1. Launch/Restart Servoy 3.1 Developer
(You can skip this step if Servoy Developer is already open.)

2. Make sure that Designer is the active window in Servoy Developer.

3. Choose Help > Help (F1).

To find out more about using the Servoy 3.1 Online Help Navigator features:

2. Click once to open the "Contents" tab of the Help Navigator.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the "Contents" tab.
4. Double click on "Appendix".
5. Double click on "The Servoy Help Navigator" section.

Searching for a Servoy 3.1 function or property in the Help Navigator:

As of Servoy 3.0 (and higher), all Servoy functions, run time properties and design
time properties have been added as separate index entries - and as a
result, can be searched for by the name of the function or property.

To find the topic that contains a Servoy function or property:

1. Choose Help > Help to open the Servoy Help Navigator.
2. Click once to open the "Index" tab.
3. Type one or more letters of the function you are searching for.
4. Select the desired function or property from the Index entry list.
5. Double click on the appropriate topic from the Topic list at the bottom
of the "Index" tab.

To find the instance(s) of the function or property within a topic:

1. Make sure that the desired topic is already open.
(Follow the steps listed above to search for a topic.)
2. Choose Tools > Find (CTRL-F/CMD-F).
3. Type in the criteria you wish to search for in "Find What".
4. Press the "Find Next" button.
5. The first instance of your search criteria will be highlighted.
6. Repeat step 4 for each additional instance of the search criteria.

NOTE: The steps shown above are available in the Servoy 3.1 Developer
User's Guide, p. 711; in the Servoy 3.1 Developer User's Guide pdf file;
and is also included in The Servoy Help Navigator section of the
Appendix - search for "Servoy Help Find Dialog".

Mohamad,

Servoy 3.1 Documentation can be purchased in printed book
form from the Servoy Store - either as a set or as individual books.

All Servoy 3.1 documentation is also available - free-of-charge - as
downloadable PDF files:

- Go to the Servoy website at http://www.servoy.com
- Click once on the "Developers" tab.
- Click once on the "Documentation" topic in the Navigation panel
on the left to expand the list of subtopics under "Documentation".
- Select the "Servoy PDF Documentation" subtopic.
- Click on the link for the Servoy 3.1 PDF file you wish to view/download.

Information on updating your version of Servoy - either manually, or
automatically - can be found in the Installation chapter of the printed
Servoy Developer User's Guide, beginning on page 20.

Hi

Thanks for the new documentation. I like it and I often read in the manuals.

One question: Why is the list of methods for application in the manual larger than in the editor? E.g. in the manual I find application.executeProgram(...) or application.closeFormDialog(..). But when I select Application on the left side of the editor in Servoy, these methods do not occur in the list of available methods.

Thanks and regards

Probably because you have the "web filter" in the view menu turned on. This function hides/unhides all functionality that is not available in the web client.

Thanks, that was it :-(

Actually, it was not the web filter (which I had turned off on purpose) but the basic filter. I did choose the advanced filter now. In the manual it says I see "more complex features and design time properties". Design time properties for me is something which is only available at design time but not runtime. What does this include? I didn't find any information about this in the manual.

Hi Marc Norman

Thank you again for answering.

I read the manual about the filters a year ago, I read it before asking in this thread and I raed it a few times since your last post.

The web filter seems clear to me, now: if checked it hides functionality which is not available in a web client.

But I have to admit that I still don't understand the basic filter and the advanced filter. Maybe the expression "design time" is misleading. For me design time properties and design time functions are something that is not available in the runtime application. This is why I was careful not to check the advanced filter. From your answer I figure out that this is not the intention.

So, who should use the basic filter and who should use the advanced filter? What are they used for? I develop a smart client (only advanced filter is checked). Can I use the advanced filter and use the whole available features without restrictions?

By the way: What happens to application.output(string) at runtime?

Thanks and regards

When run in Developer this ends up in the debugger.
When run in the (rich/headless/web) client it ends up in the server log.

Hope this helps.

When run in the (rich/headless/web) client it ends up in the server log.
Or, when you have JWS logging on (applicable to smart client) it will end up in JWS logging. I use this often to debug what happens at a single clients machine when only one client complains about something...
