Rollover States and Labels

There does not appear to be a way to have both text and images within a label OR add a label to an image unless you use a separate label. This issue this causes is that any rollover state is rendered pointless as soon as the user hovers over the label. What would be really nice would be to have a situation where you would apply text over and image within the same element AND/OR the reverse where an image and rollover could be applied to a label as in normal css

IF this is possible I would be VERY interested to know how. Essentially I am trying to create a calendar that looks like an iPhone date selector, includes functions AND rollover states. Currently this does not seem possible or at best is clunky as soon as the user rolls over the date label
