on render event not working for first record in list view

I am using an onrender event in a list view to set visibility of a set of elements:
the various elements are dropdowns off a valuelist/ free text entry/ numeric entry/ date entry

The user selects the type of field they will enter and the correct element should show.

This all works correctly except for the first record of the foundset which is unreliable at best. I need to click on the record multiple times to get the correct visibility when editing and the incorrect element displays on inquire.

Any suggestions on getting the first record to fire the on render event correctly?
