Why would removal of images increase solution size?

On our development server, I closed Developer and made a complete backup of our solution, servoy_workspace, and postgres database. I then removed 500KB of images directly from the media folder within our servoy_workspace. This was from a global solution that holds all of our images. Then I opened Developer, resolved all error messages regarding the missing images, and exported our solution with all modules.

The size of the resulting solution increased by approximately 500KB instead of decreasing. The solution appears to be now running properly. Can anyone think of a reason why the solution became larger instead of smaller?

Perhaps you increased the size of the solution when you resolved the errors of the broken links to the images originally in your global solution that held all the images. In other words, you increased the size of your solution when adding the images into the solution directly.
