Java 8 - commercial license needed in 2019

Postby Bernd.N » Thu Apr 26, 2018 9:29 am

Oracle announced there will be no more free updates in 2019 for Java 8:
https://www.java.com/en/download/release_notice.jsp

Did anybody hear about the costs of commercial licenses?
Customers start to ask about it.

Here Oracle lists different Java releases with numbers 8, 9, 10 and 11:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/eol-135779.html

Are releases with a number higher than 8 of relevance for Servoy?

Today I did an update to the latest Java version on one computer.
Oracle then showed a hint that from beginning of 2019, a commercial Java license will be needed for commercial users.
It showed this on this link:
http://java.com/de/download/release_notice.jsp

On that side are more links at the end, especially:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/eol-135779.html
https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/javaclientroadmapupdate2018mar-4414431.pdf

Here are some informations regarding the costs:

And this is an older article from 2016 with relevance to this theme:

Hello,

I've been reading and investigating this issue and I'm not totally clear about what we need to do.

What Servoy suggest us to do? We should migrate to the openJDK and tell our clients (using smart client) to do the same? It works with Servoy? Or we need to buy a comercial license for Oracle Java?

How to pay for Java...

Postby Bernd.N » Tue Dec 04, 2018 9:08 am

The large customers of Oracle should simply threaten to replace their Oracle databases by Postgres in case they have to pay for Java...
