Installing new Smart/Web Client into a prior App Server?

So a customer has an older Server installed. A client update is under a newer development environment, but not necessarily using new API calls in newer revs of Servoy.
Particularly, when a customer is running 2020.06 and a client compiled with 2020.09 is pushed, are there issues?
Does the customer need to update their Server to the latest? Or is it enough to simply have them install the .servoy export?
*** Also, is there an installer that deselects Developer install? The Wiki documentation mentions different installer types but I haven't located anything but the installer including Developer.
Moving to ng (Next Gen?) eventually, but minimizing impact on issues needing resolution without cross-contamination with new features.
