Dev-launched smart client slow when accessing remote db

I develop in 4.1 with a local repository and a local db containing test data.
I deploy to a production repository on a remote machine which I access over the internet. That machine also hosts a production db.

Sometimes I like to open a client in my Dev environment and have it connect to the remote machine's db so I can work with live, production data.
When I do this, the client is extremely slow - MUCH slower than when I open a true client from the remote app server. I would have expected the performance to be about the same. Under 3.5 performance was about the same. Is this 'expected' behavior under 4.1 or should I log a case in the support system?
