SmartClient issue on launch

Postby JohnCorb » Sat Sep 12, 2009 11:57 am

Hi guys,

I'm running in to a small problem when launching the smart client from one of my test stations.
It is working ok from other test stations.

The one I have issues on is windows xp, I am testing in firefox and IE.

I have cleared my cache, made IE the default explorer uninstalled the developer on this machine but nothing has helped so far.

When I try to open the solution I get the following in the java console:

Is there silence because I asked a stupid question or is this something unusual?

Try to clear the java cache (control panel-java-general-settings), browser cache and delete the ".servoy" folder under your user's documents and settings dir., then try again.

I tried what you suggested but this did not resolve the problem.

I have also downgraded every client to the java6 update 14 version which is running on the server, as I noticed some clients were running on update 16.

This is becoming troublesome as the customer is also reporting this issue on several of it's systems.

I seem to be able to reproduce the problem on the working station when i put the java network settings to direct connection.
When switching back to "use browser settings" it works again.

Will investigate further.

I seem to have resolved it by looking into the network connection settings.

My firefox was configured to not detect proxy.

This works in general but apparently caused a problem with the application.

I can still see the following in the java console:

Should i be worried about this?

On the other working station I also see the

SEVERE: Throwable
java.net.SocketException: factory already defined

this is thrown as SEVERE but seems not to influence the functionality.

the other ones seem to be specific to the previously non-working station but do not seem to influence anything either.

I have the impression i might have caused that one by destroying my java setup while analysing the current problem and will look further into this ;-)

remarkable point.

I was reading other forum ports for the unable to connect to dataservice problem i was experiencing and saw a post mentioning this started after putting the sybase service on automatic.

I have indeed also performed the needed to have the service come up again automatically should the server crash out and reboot.

Seems like once I had done this the 'direct connection' option which was configured before caused the application to not function correctly.

I cant see what I would have changed in the wrapper though to cause this.

I will read up on this to enhance my knowledge concerning the configuration.

In order for everything to work as it is supposed to, these exceptions should not appear. I don't understand why you'd get a 403 HTTP error code (Forbidden) from the server. I clicked on the link and it worked.
Can it be a proxy denying access?

What version of Servoy are you using?

Hi Andrei,

sorry for the late response, I have been a bit busy at work.

Version of Servoy we are using is 4.1.3.

As for the other thing.
I am testing again now and I apparently need to use direct connection settings again under java console - network settings.

When I do this it works perfectly without any errors.

I am a bit confused as to why this is changing as I have not made any changes on the server.

It must be either my ISP or the network guys on the server this is deployed on.

I have already started inquiries for the internal servers but nothing appears to have changed there.

Do you have any advice on how we could get some more details on what goes wrong for future investigations should this problem return?

It would be good to have a strategy as currently we are on a test server but we do plan to go live in the near future.

Kind regards,
John

But isn't the test client having the connection settings modified from java console? Is this on the server?
Server settings won't affect client proxy settings in java console.

Andrei,

correct.

I was just referencing that nothing has changed on the server and yet the client did not work anymore.

Since I know i didnt change anything on the client the server was the second most likely option to have something changed in my analysis.

As I knew nothing had changed there I mentioned this to indicate the weird behaviour of the client working one day on direct connection and the other day without it.

Apologies for any confusion I may have caused ;-)

I see :). Weird indeed. Well step 3 would be investigating if something changes in between I guess... Try accessing http://bbf.itaf.eu:8080/servoy.properties (or the other links that give exceptions) through the browser directly to see if it is accessible when this happens again. And see if the browser needs/doesn't need proxy settings the same as smart client - and if you need to change proxy settings for the browser as well, with no prior modification on the server&client. If the browser says the same thing it must be something that changes the way you can access the server.

also look at the java preferences in the control panel of windows
Go to network settings and set the property "use direct connections" instead of use browser settings..

Is there any other way to solve this problem without having to deal with each client that will access the client? Is Servoy working on this?

Thank you.
