Java using less colors?

I've got a question of one of our customers concerning weird display behaviour of the smart-client.
As far as I can see it looks like only the java window is using less colors (think 256), the rest of the window seems to display fine.
Attached 2 screenshots of the wrong & correct color behaviour.
Does anyone know how to solve this?
The customer is using Windows7 with a recent java version.
