Running Servoy Client on Windows CE - and palm pilots?

Postby fire » Wed Mar 17, 2004 6:07 am

Since Servoy is Java based, is it possible to run servoy client on a Compaq Ipaq that runs windows CE? How about a palm pilot?

The idea would be to install the firebird database (since it is small) on the ipaq, or palm...

please let me know your thoughts...

It is my understanding that currently the servoy clients are based on J2SE. The java version available on Palms and PDA's is J2ME (what you could see as a slimmed down version of J2SE). By consequence this means, to my regret, that for the moment a Servoy client will NOT run on Palm/PDA. However if I'm reading the stars correctly, this situation will be changed before the end of the year.

If you need portability ASAP I suggest you take a look at http://www.flipstartpc.com.

By "the stars" what exactly do you mean? did you know something I don't? Is servoy actually building a J2ME platform?

It's my understanding that this exactly what they will be doing after the step (version 2.5?) where they will be online syncing

No there is no JRE on those platforms hence you cannot run Smart Client on it. You can run the web client on it however, recommended is to use a better browser (eg Opera) to have AJAX support

There is no out of the box JRE on a Win CE device but there are a number of Java virtual machines (JVM) that you can get for a Windows CE device which would give you a JRE. Servoy would not work on a CE JVM because the Java CDC (connected device profile) is a cut down version of Java that although useful, limits what you can do. Servoy smart client is written for Java standard edition which is what most clients will be running on their desktop machines.
