Java 8 Update 77 and desktop shortcut for Smart Client

Postby Bernd.N » Fri Apr 15, 2016 5:10 pm

We have users where the desktop shortcut for the smart client did not work again after an update to Java 8 Update 77.
Deleting the Java cache which normally helps in such cases did not work either.
And a new shortcut was not created any more.

(1) Did anybody have a similar problems and found a solution for this?

In the created Servoy desktop shortcut for the jnlp, you can find a link like this:
"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_65\bin\javaws.exe" -localfile -J-Djnlp.application.href=http://deXYZ.net:8080/servoy-client/bob.jnlp "C:\Users\bkorthaus\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\45\228363ed-538ee399"

(2) Is it save and wise to take away the full path to javaws.exe, so that an update will have no effects on the shortcut?
I thought it might be less save, as some virus programs could name themselves as javaws.exe.
With the full path, you really always know which javaws.exe gets called.

Solution

The IT admin of our customer deleted the Java Cache manually with the following description that can be found in the web.
After that he installed the latest Java 8 Update 91, and everything worked fine again and the desktop icon was automatically created after download of the webstart jnlp.

------------------
How to clear the Java WebStart cache:
This method should only be used as a last ditch effort to clear the cache. If you have not tried the standard way, please do so first.

Open Windows Explorer (on my computer, this can be found from Start/Programs/Accessories)
In Windows Explorer, expand (click the + sign to the left) My Computer

expand Local Disk (C:)
expand Documents and Settings
expand the folder identified with your profile-username
expand AppData
expand LocalLow
expand Sun (also Oracle)
delete the folder Java

Note that the folder Java may refuse to be deleted unless all Java WebStart applications are closed.
