Java: OpenJDK instead of Oracle's Java possible?

I have just seen an announcement from ELO (Enterprise Content Management) that they plan to switch from Oracle's Java to cost free OpenJDK this May, to spare its customers the new Java license costs.

Would that be possible also when using Servoy Smart Client?

Hi Bernd,

Only Smartclient Servoy 8 can start without JavaWebStart through the stand alone bootstrapper.jar.
Servoy has no plans to rollback that to Servoy 7 regrettably (so I have heard).

Hi Lambert,

do you mean that OpenJDK does not provide JavaWebStart and therefore OpenJDK is not possible to use for Servoy 7 Smart Client?
At least that is what I read from your post.

My question was more general if a cost free OpenJDK is a possible alternative for Oracle's $$-Java.
When browsing, I also found alternatives for Oracle's WebStart (e.g. Netx and OpenWebstart from Karakun).

Hi Bernd,

Yes, that is what I mean. OpenJKD does not provide Javawebstart.
I did some testing with two alternatives for Javawebstart but I did not manage to get the Smart client (with the Servoy generated jnlp file) running...

that Netx will be a bit useless i think, very old and i think not supported for many years

but https://dev.karakun.com/webstart/ could be come a very nice thing, it is kind of bootstrapper but then with a lot around it (ui on the client)
And also with native installers and an auto java download ..
could be a promising thing besides our bootstrapper
