Servoy 2019.x on MacBook Pro 16" & macOS Catalina

Q&A regarding installation and issues getting started with Servoy

Servoy 2019.x on MacBook Pro 16" & macOS Catalina

Postby rafig » Fri Jan 17, 2020 9:04 pm

Hi all,
wasn't sure which section to post this, so trying here ;-)
I'm thinking about upgrading from my (old) rMBP 15" (Mid 2014) running Mojave to a new rMBP 16" running Catalina (so no more 32 bit apps allowed).
Does anyone here have any experience with
1) Catalina & Servoy 2019.x & if so, are there any issues?
2) the new 16" MacBook Pro (& then above point 1)?
Have a good weekend
Thanks

Hi Rafi,

Personally I haven't made the step to Catalina, but helped out fellow developers.
There's a gotcha on installing the old Mac Java 6 installer, which is still needed for older Servoy versions.
The 2019 versions run without any problem.

Running a 15 inch Touch Bar MBP (2018) myself, I like it :-)
I don't know what your specific question on the 16 inch MBP is, but Servoy is very capable of handling that extra inch ;-)

Hi Rafi

Highly recomend the MBPro16 - I'm on my 2nd as had keyboard issue after 5 weeks with first one. But Apple store insist the problem was "unique" - so that's alright then  However they agreed to replace on the spot so only cost me a few hours.

Keyboard is much nicer than my previous 2014 MBPro and the extra screen size is nice to have. Extra RAM and CPU performance would be very useful if my coding was efficient enough to use them.

As Marc says you will need to install the older Java 6 to run SV74x Developer - just follow the link when you startup Servoy - but then it is business as usual.

You will notice the extra weight if carrying around a lot but can count it as good exercise.

Cheers

Hi Marc, thanks.
I wanted to check if Servoy 2019.x worked ok on MBP16, which Graham seems to have answered...

Hi Graham, thanks for clarifying that, it's always nice to know...
As Apple are still offering 0% finance (in UK) until 30th Jan., I think I might take this opportunity to make the change ;-)
(I will have to install the old Java for some old clients Servoy 7 stuff, but the rest is now in Servoy 8 & 2019...)

Thanks all

Hi Rafi

I should have been more specific - only used 7.4x so far.

Still does everything existing Clients need for the moment

Thanks Graham (you should be moving to 8/2019 ;-) )
I will have to assume that 2019 works ok on it (can't see why not...)

Hi Rafi,

I have a 2019.03.x deployed and the smart-client seems to run fine on Catalina (in a VM)

Hope this helps.

Hmm...I do see that the right border is off by 1 pixel..which in many cases this means there is no right border. This is on Java 8u231 on Catalina.

Hi Robert, thanks for that (I should have tried to do a VM with Catalina...)
I won't be put off too much by pixel issues ;-)

Hi,
well I now have my lovely MBP16 but when I tried to run a Servoy 8.x Developer, it showed the 'requires old Java' message, I downloaded it, ran installer, but it wouldn't install as it said a newer version was already installed!
Is there an OpenJDK version of Java, or another one I can manually download that will let me run Servoy 8.x?
[But I do have a newer 2091.x version running that came with it's own Java...]
Or do I need to redownload the all-in-one version for Mac with the 'firstuse' file (i.e. the one with built-in Java), and if so, how do I access older releases to download??

Thanks

Hi Rafi,

there is a way of editing some file for the Servoy Developer to tell it what Java to use.
The instructions are somewhere on this forum...
