Smart Client starts with blank screen

Postby xtsr » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:00 am

When I open my solution in the Smart Client, I end up with a blank (grey) screen. The login works fine, the onOpen method of the solution is processed without problems, there are no error messages in the server log, and there is no message in the os x system console (except confirming the registration of the tools plugin). I've noticed this behavior occasionally before, but on the second try it always worked.
Opening the solution in the web client works, but this is not an option for me...
What's really weird is that if i use the OS X time machine to go back to an earlier version of my servoy_workspace, the solution starts up fine again. I have tried many times to find out, when or why the problem occurs, but could not find a pattern. I keep running in circles, always having to going back to the Saturday's version of my solution! Quite frustrating to say the least...

The only thing that could give a hint is that it worked fine today, then I connected to my remote DB over VPN (only to execute a couple of queries in the SQL-GUI), afterwards the Smart Client did not work anymore. The solution connects to the MySQL DB on the localhost, so I don't need the VPN connection. I don't see how the two things could be related, but I'm getting a bit desperate here...

I also deleted the solution and imported the latest release again - no success.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

Working on Servoy 4.1.3 - build 672, OS X ( 10.5.8 ), MySQL 5.0 Backend

Are there any exceptions in the workspace log (yourWorkspaceDir/.metadata/.log)?

Ah wait, you are running from the server.
In this case, any exceptions in Java Console? (check Applications -> Utilities -> Java Preferences -> Advanced -> Java Console -> Show Console before launching the smart client to see the Java Console).

Thanks Andrei,
I see no messages in Java Console.log. It's strange, that after enabling the Java Console the SmartClient works again (for now). As soon as I have the problem again, I will check the console.

I also checked the workspace log. Don't know if this helps...

Hi all,
I am suddenly getting this same issue!
I am using Servoy 5
Code: Select all
Servoy
Version: 5.0.0  - build 859

and trying to launch SmartClient to work/test with, but nothing appears! :(
It is running my open & close methods, as I added in some app.outputs that are displaying in console.
It will also show in WebClient.
I did try and enable the Java Console & then it did appear, but now it isn't and I haven't changed anything :?
Console is showing these messages (but nothing too odd, I don't think)
Code: Select all

Please help as I can't really do any proper work if I can't use Serclipse to develop with.

Was it working before for you in Servoy 5?

Do you deeplink into the solution AND have the solution browsing option turned of on the admin page?

I have this also many times, I think it's a apple java issue.....

first we thought it has something todo with the community-splash, but also after filling in the license, we have this two times a week! :-(

Dito on my new Mac - v4.1.4 and v5. Reboot of Developer necessary - sometimes more than once.

Indeed, sometimes a whole reboot of the mac, is needed...
Johan already look into it, and he says it is something deep in the jvm of apple.....

I hope they can somehow reproduce it, and work-around it, because, I'm about to throw, my mac out of the window....

Yes, and is again now, but I don't know how long for...

I don't deeplink and do have solution browsing turned on.

I have another install of Servoy 5 for a different client's solution and that was working fine at the same time as this one wasn't working, so I'm not sure if it is a Java issue.

This is a big issue if it keeps happening, as I am trying (I'm sure like most other Servoyians) to complete development for my client and won't be able to if I can't run/test/debug.

Is there anything I can provide you with to help you to sort this out?

Thanks,
Rafi

Hi Rafig,

You forgot one thing.....you didn't format the drive and reinstalled the OS. ;) :D j/k

I haven't seen this issue in 5 anymore (I believe). I had it plenty in 4.x.
Perhaps it has something to do with that I use Java 6 (64-bits) ?
(note: switching to 64-bits java doesn't make Eclipse launch into 64 bits mode, the installer installs for the java version you have at install time)

I have switched to 64 bit, but the issue stays the same.

I get the impression, when you really wait 15 minutes after firing up developer, and than start debug client, it opens up......
but I have tried soooo many things, that I'm not sure, what really helps right now.... :-(

I just remembered....I did file a case a while back with a zip of one of my workspaces that can reproduce the issue 100% (for me).

how long does the building of the solution take?
Is it building when you are starting the client?

Hi Johan,

For me in 4 I always checked if Eclipse was done with what it's doing (by checking the progress view).
And it still came up with blank clients. And blank I mean, no form, no menubar, no anything.
