A liberated getAsPlainText function

A function which will return the plain text content of a field (strip the HTML and RTF coding) and do so whether or not the currently displayed form is that of the calling method, and regardless of whether the field to be processed is displayed anywhere.

The current element.getAsPlainText function requires the field be formatted for HTML or RTF, that it be currently displayed when processing and that the method making the call belong to the currently displayed form. These limitations force the placement of 1 pixel by 1 pixel fields on forms in the style of FMP workarounds.

Good idea.

In the meantime, I would suggest that you create a form that has the HTML/RTF fields you need on it (with the displayFormat set appropriately) - and then access that form when you need to extract the plainText rather than putting 1x1 fields on your other form.

That’s exactly what I did in order to discover (after three days of puzzling) why my code wasn’t working. I added a show to the calling routine. Suddenly the routine worked.

But that wasn’t good enough. There are four different entry points to the routine. I needed some way to return the user to the correct entry point. It was just easier to dump the special form and place a tiny locked field on the current form. It’s time to get to market.

At least the stripping of HTML could be done with a regular expression inside JavaScript. RTF is a bit more complex…

Hi Patrick! I have this replace method to strip the HTML, but it’s not perfect…

var myField = myText.replace(/<.*>\n/g,"");

Do you have something better?

I am using a functionality from our home made plugin. Just checked and saw that I use this regexp:

"\\<.*?\\>"

this works fine for me. The other thing you need to do is to un-escape HTML entities like  . I also do this in my plugin. Here is the hash map I am using, in case that helps:
