anybody’s got doc about the beans provided with servoy dev?
I am trying to find out the syntax of these, but you can have stuff like:
setValues(number, number, number).
Perfect, but which is which?? and I can’t find anything relevant so far…
2 years and half later, the pb is still the same! is this question that stupid?
setValues(number, number, number)
Where do you get this message.
Your question is not stupid but when you have an issue with either a plug-in or a bean you need to consider the following:
- When Servoy created the plugin or bean add the issue to their support system.
- When a third party created a Servoy plugin or bean you can add the issue to their support system (for IT2BE is this http://www.it2be.com/support/).
- When it is a Java bean (not a plugin) created by a third party, not written for Servoy you have to pick up the docs from that third party.
As far as I know Servoy has written down notice that they only distribute these beans but they can not take responsibility.
Makes sense because they don’t have the source.

how could I know the origin, you’re assuming I am a java man, I’m not.
if it is in the package, it must be documented.
2
we’ll see, I tested some of your stuff today and posted a question. btw, some of your tools are not documented either. I can understand the doc is not finished, but why is it for sale then?

provided I know where it comes from…
This is a wider debate we can have, but my position can be summed up by these few points:
If i buy an IDE, this is to avoid to waste my time to collect bits and pieces on the web to build up a solution. I want to stay concentrated on making a solution, not collecting the tools.
I am against plug-ins when it becomes too much. I hate the filemaker world because I need 15 plug-ins, and some very basic needs are still not integrated. Servoy does the same. I have had an issue for pdf files which has never been fixed, I gave up. The servoy doc is wrong, period. They say you can download a certain bean (no name!) from their site, wrong, it’s not.
What I would expect from a good supplier who makes its compatibility with the outside world an argument is to collect the outside bits, and documentation and integrate them. See how many plug-ins you wrote… they should be bought by servoy, maybe no all of them, but 1/2 of them.
Instead, to build a solution you need 2 weeks of inventories to make sure you’ll be able to fullfill yours needs. what a waste, specially when the solution exists.
I have been playing with servoy from time to time since 2005, but never used it for real because I could never do the whole thing with it. or maybe I could have beena ble, but I did nto know.
Why is windows so successful? because you buy it ready to go. why is linux so minor, because it’s not.
My concern is not to collect the servoy options, but to build solutions for customers. Would you accept to have to give a call to Valeo to find out how to change a light bulb on you car? no.
So, it’s up to them, if they go ahead this way, they will remain a toolkit seller, and they will need a strong marketing like filemaker to live.
Look at you calendar, how good is that for a planning: by leaving it external to their package, they neglect a good selling argument. Actually they copy the same filemaker faults. But I could also add that your own price should integrate the libs instead of asking your customer to purchase them separately. All in all, if I want to use that, I need to buy 3 things
from 3 companies, because noone wants to takes responsabilities for others; great, wholl do it? me? maybe unless I find a better route like 4D where everything is integrated by them.
To sum up, the servoy solution would gain a lot by being much more integrated with its external options. because in the end, the silent part of users like me (almost silent!) is leaving the place wihtout saying anything, but never adopt the product because they have the feeling this package is too messy. what a waste…

You don’t have to be a Java man. Most Servoy users are not.
The documentation of Servoy tells you which bean is part of their distribution.

Plugins and Beans are almost all documented.
Maybe not all with written docs but there are always sample solutions and there are always samples inline.
When something is wrong many things could cause that. You will always receive an answer (except for the weekend).

really? maybe I should re-install to find out the originals; they are not separate, so I can’t state on that now. The htmlpane for instance? I don’t remember downloading this. And it is pretty bad, but am I using correctly? mystery.
2
true, I confirm. and your scripts have comments, which I appreciate. but for complex beans witrh unmerous setingsand I was not expecting an answer tonight anyway.

what’s your opinion about the rest, am I the only one upset by this external things you have to collect on your own? by beans mentionned but difficult to find?? let me know, I am interested in yr opinion as a plug-in writer too. (this can wait untill on monday of course)
- Basically, talking about plug-ins and beans it is quite easy right now.
A plug-in, after a fresh install, is always one created by Servoy and documented.
A bean, as far as I now is never developed/part of Servoy.
They are (third party) Java components.
Talking about the htmlpane, you don’t need it. You can simply set a field to an htmlarea and you have the same. - OK
- You are the only one upset as far as I know but not the only one with questions.
Servoy adds the beans to make a statement/show you that you can work with Java beans. The rest is up to you.
In general a lot of beans work within Servoy without many issues.
When they become more complicated, like for example the MIG Calendar libraries or the JGantt libraries, it is best to wrap the bean like we did to make your life easier.
My advise, simply ask a strait forward question about the bean you have questions about and there will certainly be people around that will and can help you.
When you want to do it yourself search the internet maybe…
Hope this helps.
