Can't get this puppy to start up

Hi,

I just downloaded the developer version to give it a look-see. But, when I try to start it up, what I get is the splash screen, along with a minimized window down in the corner of my desktop. Task manager shows a process, but no CPU utilization. And it just sits there until I kill it.

Any idea what might be going on? This is on Window 7, and I’ve got the Java runtime installed as well, which I downloaded right before the Servoy install.

Thanks for any advice you might be able to provide.

Ron

Hi Ron,

Welcome to Servoy!

Have you tried maximizing this little window you tell about.
It should be the one telling you that your workspace is locked asking you to choose another one.

Either you have another instance of Servoy already started, or because you always kill the process, the .lock file located in you workspace is never cleared.

So try
1/ choosing another workspace (simply a directory to point on)
2/ before starting it, go to your current workspace (the little window should have told you where it is located), inside the “.metadata” folder, and get rid of the “.lock” file.

Then the puppy should start! :)

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Appreciate it.

A couple of clarifications…

  1. The little window on the desktop won’t maximize. Tried that. The only option on the window is the “X”. I think it is saying something about a workspace, but the title bar on the window is cut off, so I can’t really tell. What it says is “Workspace La…”; the rest is cut off.

  2. I just killed the app by x’ing out of the little window. I didn’t actually kill the process in the task manager. I tried again and took a look in the Task Manager after I closed the app, and there doesn’t appear to be any “Servoy”-named things in either processes or services.

So, kinda confused, but not the first time, to be sure! :-). Any chance that this might be related to the Java Runtime or something like that?

Thanks again.

Ron

OK, so the window won’t maximize, which is bad. That it is related to the Java runtime, I can’t tell.

What OS are you on?

On Windows, you could try going to C:\Documents And Setting.… or C:\Users\youraccount\servoy_workspace.metadata\ and delete the .lock file, then start again.

Hi,

Thanks again.

Ok, I don’t have a “servoy_workspace”, but I do have just simpley “workspace”. Within the .metadata folder, I don’t see a .lock file, but I do have a .log file, which had the following error in it…

Does that provide any sort of clue?

Ron

Yes, workspace is the one, and .metadata in it. Since you don’t have a .lock file this means that it is not in use.

The error in your log indicates that there is a problem with your Servoy/Eclipse install.
Meaning that you will have to uninstall/reinstall.

What OS are you using? If Vista/7 take care to launch the installer with admin rights, that helps.

Hi,

Running Win7. I’ll uninstall and give it another shot.

Thanks.

Ron

Hi,

Ok, so I uninstalled and then reinstalled from the large file that I downloaded yesterday. Got the same result. From the log file, it appears that some components for the Eclipse installation are missing for some reason. Ran as administrator as well.

Oh, well. Thanks for your help, anyway.

Ron

Either the file you downloaded was corrupt or there is something else screwing up your install…
Did you do a default install?

What does Servoyan think about it?

Hi,

Just did the standard install. I can try re-downloading it and doing the install again.

Probably a silly question, but who or what is Servoyan?

Thanks.

Ron

One of the people of Servoy.

Oh. I need an emoticon with a really embarrassed look on it. :-)

Thanks.

Ron

Hi,

I re-did the download. Also, I remembered that at the point where you select installation options, I had checked the box for installing the runtime builder, which will be important for me. This time, I just left everything as is, and the installation completed normally, and Servoy started.

Now, to figure out if it’s going to work for me. I want to convert an old Access97 application, and while I want to retain the basic UI, I want to update it a bit and work towards a web-enabled version as well. But, those are questions for another day!

Thanks again.

Ron
