client problem ather half a day

An user has a problem with the client when he works about half a day with Servoy. The application shows a different font and some tabareas are grey. Also the code doesn’t work properly.

After a restart of the client the problems are gone. The other users have no problems at all with Servoy.

Has anyone seen this issue before?

Java version: 11.3-b02
Servoy version: 3.5.9
maxClientHeap = 256
Hp Laptop met windows xp sp2 (dual screen)
power settings are all off

What is the memory usage in about dialog when this happens?

Hi Leendert,

your problem “smells” like a memory leak of some sort.
You should check the memory available in the client (use the java console to get more info if needed).

Hope this helps,

Hi,

On behalve of Leendert :

We disable all servoy menu’s, so about is not available.

The problem on this client(laptop) ocurred once today, the Javaw.exe for this smart client used 135 M at that time.
That is the same as on the other clients. None of the other clients has this issue.
They all run the same Servoy solution from the same (in house) Servoy Server.

Would it be wise to enable the Java console on this client ?
Are there specific things to look at ?

Or is there another way to find the cause of this issue ?

Today the problem occurred after the smart client had been inactive for some time, because the user left his workplace.
There was another application on the foreground (ful screen), when he “restored” the smart client, the problem was there.

Could it be related to a sleep mode of the laptop, which would prevent access to the network or other essential resouces?

Could you find out what kind of devices are forced to sleep when the laptop enter the sleep mode (I don’t have a laptop near me right now and it depends on the OS, but if I were you I would try to get some more information about it).

Hope this helps,

Are you running with a recent/latest java version?

Yes ,

1.6.0_13

We now enabled the Java Console to see if there are errors when the issue occurs.

Hans

Last the time user has this problem, the javaconsole output the following information: Memory: 56.608K Free: 20.493K (36%) … completed.

The user noticed that the problem occurred when the computer had not have any activity during half an hour. The laptop from the user can’t go to sleepmode. We’ve disabled that option in the control panel, power options.

what is the cpu usage when you see that happening? Is it somehow hogging cpu?

also painting problems could happen to the display driver or direct x installation. You could try to update both.

Hi,

This gets weirder now.

We updated Directx and the display driver.
When the problem occurs cpu is 0 % and memory usage is about 60 Mb.

I am sure it can’t be Servoy who is causing this. All other clients (desktops/laptops even dual screen ) run fine with the same solution.

The user now has the follwowing issue (I stould next to him when it happened) :

  • He came in this morning and started up his laptop.
  • He logged in and started outlook to check his mail.
  • While outlook was synchronising he started the smartclient.
  • The smartclient windows appears on the screen, but tho “progress bar/indicator” at the lower right that normaly is constantly
moving from left to right and back does not move at all. Servoy does not show the application and seems to stop responding.
  • then outlook complains about the network connections beeing lost.
  • and indeed we cannot ping to any other server. The network connection of this laptop is lost.

We then restarted this laptop, logged in and then started Servoy without starting anything else.
Same issue.

After trying 3 or 4 times it suddenly worked and kept working.

This only happens about once a day and the only application having trouble is Servoy.
It happens after startup of this laptop, or when he leaves his workplace and comes back after some time.
If he only uses Office and outlook it never happens.

I am lost here … Any ideas ?? (besides maybe re-install this laptop)

B.t.w. is see following erros on this laptop in the server log :```
java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset

Regards,

does he have another method of connection to the network?
Like switching from wifi to fixed or the other way around?

No, the same connection that the other laptops use (hp docking station)

Regards,

Hans

so he doesnt have 2?
Because it really seems a problem of the network card/driver or something.

Somehow this reminds me of something, i really get a dejavu feeling here.

You are referring to this ?

I’ve found the problem. The screensaver somehow effected the display drivers and the laptop had an incompatible dockingstation. I’ve changed dockingstation and the screensaver and the problem didn’t occur for about a week now.
