I am interested in defining my own reports using the Jasper Report Studio (which is based on IReports). I am also interested in running the compiled report (jrxml file) from within the Servoy application without using the Servoy plugin.
I am also assuming that I can pass parameters and/or the specific SQL statement to the iReports (like I found in a search of the forum).
If anyone else is interested or has done this before and desires the share ideas then please let me know.
If there are no interested parties in this approach then I will continue to develop the approach and individuals can contact me directly.
(I had to re-register with a slightly different name because the forum change of password crashed…)
The reason to not use the Servoy Plugin is (as I replied to Aaron Archer) is that I do not need the training package and it is too expensive as well.
IF I can make a basic separate application (written in Java) that can be called by the application.“execute program in background” method from Servoy then it is sufficient for what I want to do.
I realize that Servoy may have invested heavily in the plugin and does not want to provide hand holding support.
However, I beleive that I can make a simple interface so that the programmer can call the external program with arguments that specify the Jasper report (already compiled) and some parameters that may affect the filling of the report with data etc.
I am also willing to make this an “Open Source” application so that the community could contribute (or not as they see fit).
I would have liked to see the plugin fitted with the Servoy app and not as a separate item of cost.
I would have also liked to have seen a spec sheet with the features (I did see a forum topic with someone else requesting this but there was no response - at least not on the forum).
Since Servoy is moving to the Eclipse IDE, there is already a Jasper Reports plugin available for this IDE. Sop that would be ideal to see it integrated with the Servoy Eclipse based IDE…
I am not in competition with any Servoy Staff that provides support for this plugin - merely desire to have a low cost alternative. IF it works for me then I was assuming that it might be useful for a certain class of application providers that have a need for simple interface to Jasper Reports.
This will be a work in progress for a while. If there are other forum members desiring to get involved then so much the better - including Servoy of course!
At least some of the libraries included with the Jasper plugin are GPL. iText for example. Although JasperReports itself is not GPL, other libraries the plugin depends on are. In this scenario, I am unclear how Servoy could sell the plugin without making it [a derivative work] open. I always assumed “training” was provided b/c the plugin itself could not be sold??? If it can indeed be sold, I for one would happily opt for the lower-cost option sans training as the Jasper plugin is a very expensive one.

Jeff we are well aware of how GPL works. Servoy does not sell any Jasper components. Also iText is not GPL but LGPL which allows integration in commercial software. To avoid any GPL discussion Servoy has a policy of not bundling any GPL software with any of our products that we license to customers.
At this moment Servoy sells a support pack including an online training for $2000 as a requirement to get access to our Jasper plugin: this is a plugin that allows to easier integrate Jasper reports into Servoy, note that we do not license the plugin to avoid any GPL discussions. Based on popular demand we are now considering to remove the support of the package to be able to lower the price for the people that cannot afford the $2000 and are willing to rely on community support. Please note that Jasper integration is not a profit centre at Servoy.
We are also looking at further integration in future releases of Servoy. More on that as details arise.
I bought the plugin w/ training. I would have preferred to have bought it without. If a future version of the plugin is available sans training, and can indeed be sold, I for one would be excited about that.
Due to popular demand the Jasper online training is now also offered as pure online (flash) excluding support at a reduced rate of $495
You can purchase it online at: servoy.com/store
I am not sure if I understand you correctly. Does the item “Servoy JasperReports Training - no support - On-Line version” include the Jasper plug-in needed for Servoy - if one likes to use Jasper Report/iReport?
Thanks for clarifying, best regards, Robert
