Until today I thought I understood what the licensing arrangement is between Sybase iAnywhere and Servoy for the use of the Sybase Anywhere database as a backend. I had thought it was free so long as the back end is only accessed by Servoy and not by any other application.
But today I was informed in an email from an iAnywhere account manager that: “You can fully develop using Servoy, however once you want to deploy your application then you would require to purchase a database.”
Which is it? Is there a page on servoy.com or a section in the documentation that deals with this question?
Your post makes it sound more confusing then it is
You cannot use iAnywhere for free except for development (this is their default license). When you purchase Servoy Client (Smart or Web), Runtime, Offline they include a iAnywhere CAL (Client Access License). So indeed iAnywhere is not FREE, you pay for it when you buy a Servoy license; no need to send extra money to Sybase (although I’m sure they’d be happy if you would)
Essentially if you develop a Servoy appplication all you need to deploy is:
-1 client license for each concurrent user of that application
no server license, no database server license, no options, no extra fees for the mail plugin (or any of the other 10 plugins), etc.
If you paid your client licenses then you are set to deploy iAnywhere with Servoy only.
If you deploy iAnywhere with other tools than Servoy you need to pay iAnywhere additional licenses.
