Naming Conventions

Hello

I have a question about naming conventions: Is it possible to use longer names for relations than only 32 characters? Table names are sometimes longer than 14 characters and with to in between 32 characters are reached pretty soon!

Yes, you can have longer names - at least with windows & sybase. What database and platform are you using?

I’m using Sybase and Windows XP pro. But will there not be problems using longer names with methods (Java script)?

Shouldn’t be, but you should test if you have some need for unusually long relation names as there may be limit at some point. Try 257 chars and see what happens. Obviously, if you can, keep the names short and concise. This makes it easier to read and navigate in developer. There’s no requirement to name relations by their tables. I find it is more useful to use the names of keys in relation names anyway. Of course, it is also good to keep key names short, concise, and consistent…
