New: Kydome Menus Plugin

Specialized versus Standard?

Humm.
Sorry to disagree Marcel, but standard menu functionality like in:
VFP
Borland Delphi, C++ Builder, REALbasic, VB, …

Is just that. Standard menu functionality.
This is one of those things really missing and it’s very, very basic.

On the other hand
I would rather have:
Servoy’s abstraction of database interaction, zero-deployment, HTML web-client / Java rich/smart-client, data broadcasting, Javascript scripting, ability to interact (webservices, etc) and extend the platform (plugins, Javabeans, etc…

If that’s the trade-off.

best, Miguel

VFP, Borland Delphi, C++ Builder, REALbasic, VB, ..
They are all language development IDE’s.
Servoy is an application development IDE.

The difference is subtle, but it is there.

If Servoy assigned resources to develop such UI enhancements, then their work in that area could go on forever.

It’s hard for Servoy to so “NO” to a request once they have already delivered similar functionality. I believe that’s why they leave that kind of work to 3rd parties.

They are all language development IDE’s.

I’ve always seen people develop applications is those IDE’s!?

Servoy is also an application development framework :-)
Just like VFP - the difference being M$ made a lousy job with the xBase language and Servoy is doing wonders with JavaScript and Java.

In all of the IDE’s / application development environments I’ve mentioned, and in plenty more, there are third party developers who create add-ons/frameworks/components/plug-ins/classes/…
I’m all for it. I even think that there are many cases when a third party has developed a certain functionality it doesn’t make any more sense to develop it in the main product.

Of course everyone is entitled to a different opinion but mine is that full menu control (just like multiforms or forms instances) is a standard feature. But I impartialy recognize that there are arguments for the alternative opinion.

we can always discuss this over a beer in Servoy world anyway.
Best,

There are still hundreds of items on our todo list to implement and every-time we try to pick the ones that are most necessary. If certain functionality is already available through a third party we’d rather focus on getting other most wanted functions in than trying to dupe functions already available as a plugin. Most probably at some point in time we will have a menu-ing functionality available but until then there’s an excellent plugin from It2be.
