We are starting to get frustrated with continually passing exports back and forth in order to do collaborative development. So we were thinking of setting up a multi-developer server.
Can anyone recommend a US hosting company to support our needs for a development environment? I know we at least need Java, multiple DBs and shell access - but is there anything else that makes Servoy hosting special? For example, some hosting companies are telling us we need a dedicated server if we want to run Tomcat, and that option looks like it starts at around $80/mo.
Have you tried hosting the Multi-Dev Server yourself? We have it setup on a 2yrs old Dell Desktop box with ADSL internet connection. Three Developers have access plus several Client test applications are also running on this setup.
Slight delays at times but quite acceptable and MUCH more efficient than ‘taking it in turns’.
We’re using LAN & WAN with good results. Most of Multi-Dev work is WAN from UK and Europe. I’ve worked on it from Airports & Motorway Service Stations using WiFi without any problems. Has proved to be a very good investment.
Thanks for the reply, Graham. We have thought about hosting ourselves - just need to get somebody to volunteer a dedicated machine. But we were also thinking of using the WAN dev environment as a means of testing out the hosting service for a potential live deploy, since our customer’s LAN and internal IT support aren’t quite up to par.
Seems like there are a bunch of hosting solutions in Europe that cater specifically to Servoy, but so far the folks I’ve contacted in the US (Goddaddy, Rackspace, CQHost, Dbdom, Mosso) don’t even know what Servoy is, and usually just say “sure - whatever - set it up on a dedicated server.” And then the monthly quote is between $80-$400.
So is this pretty much the spec required to deploy Servoy via WAN for dev and live multi-user environments (if you are not hosting from home or LAN)?
1GB RAM (for Tomcat)
dedicated server with Java installed
Any other specifics we should ask the hosting company for supporting Servoy apps?
We have UK customers whose entire systems are on Harjo’s server and they have accessed it from all over the USA plus Mexico and Brazil. This is a decent sized solution with 300+ Forms etc etc.
Thanks for the tips - Harjo, Graham - we will look into Direct ICT for hosting the production solution. So, for distributed, multi-user development, it looks like everybody just finds a dedicated machine in-house and sticks it on-line, huh? Rather than going with a hosting service?
