Slider Control on Custom Form Controllers?

The Slider data-navigation control that appears on the “Default” form controller is a very handy tool - it would be nice if I could use it on my custom form controllers. Is that possible?

You want to have the default slider on a custom navigator form? if so this is not possible.

I have spoken to several developers who have agreed it would be nice to have a slider-type navigation control we could place on our custom controller/navigator forms. Just to be clear, I’m talking about a slider object that you can place on a custom controller and that allows you to navigate the controlled form’s foundset just like a default controller’s slider.

I have heard rumors that a third party might be creating something like this and selling it. That would be nice, but I think it would be even better if it were part of the product itself.

Given that Servoy has already implemented this on default controllers, I would have guessed this isn’t a big job for Servoy, but perhaps I’m missing something.

Thanks.

I’ll second that. If I have no choice but to purchase and use third party plugins, I will. However, I believe a basic set of tools should be included and supported within the Servoy environment.

Servoy is relatively small, and the third party developers are even smaller. So it is somewhat risky to venture too far out of the “core” product, as the availability of some of these tools over new iterations is somewhat tenuous. I’ve run into this in my previous development environment of Omnis and Filemaker, and having been burned a few too many times, I try to avoid these circumstances.

I would like to see a basic set of Javabeans supported and documented. I would also like to see Servoy’s security model extended to use Active Directory in a meaningful way. This was “kind of” promised for version 3, and has now been handed off to a third party developer. I believe it’s too critical of a function to be handled that way, and integrated properly. I hope Servoy will reconsider this functionality going forward.

I’ve been told that there’s little interest in Active Directory based security, and I find that difficult to comprehend. Once you have used it, it really is hard to go back, and not having it creates quite a bit of additional work on the Administrative side of things.

But, lets get some Standard Beans going first! ;-)

Cheers!

Hi Lee, I understand what you mean here. Being a third party developer for plugins and beans I can only confirm that we are a small company.

However, if you would let me (not on the forum btw) I could explain to you why dealing with us is not risky at all. In fact as long as Servoy is along we will be around (and maybe beyond). But to make it a healthy business we would still need customers :)

I, and I bet my collegues as well, can not comment on what is promised or not but when you need some functionality that is not (going to be) part of a Servoy distribution we are happy to help you out. It is just that it needs to be of interest for both parties…

So it is somewhat risky to venture too far out of the “core” product, as the availability of some of these tools over new iterations is somewhat tenuous.

Guess that is a matter of what was first. The chicken or the egg. I think a lot of eggs have been laid but customer are needed to breed them and lay more eggs :)

I bet a lot of solutions would not have been created or not have been so ‘tasty’ without (Servoy to begin with of course and) plugins and beans developed by 3rd party developers. I for one can name a few :)

Well, so far my 2 cents…

Marcel:

No offense was meant towards third partys. I be a small developer too when all is said and done. ;-)

For some functionality, I am willing to roll the dice. For core functions like security, I really think Servoy needs to take the lead and integrate this functionality tightly with the product. I may be asking too much, but I was lead to believe certain things where coming soon, and they just did not materialize.

I am running into some difficult issues as I try to make a prototype that is somewhat comparable to my FM app. without expending a great deal of effort. Many of my inquiries have been met lately with “can’t do that”, or “get this fellow here to do a plugin”. That’s a bit frustrating when your just trying to build some steam. My boss doesn’t want to hear I need to license another plugin every other day, or that it can’t be done in a reasonable amount of time. I still have lots to learn, but I think some of these issues are common to many who want to come aboard the “good ship Servoy”.

I am looking forward to the Developer conference to see if some of these items can be resolved.

Thanks for your communication and efforts. I’m not ruling anyting out, just stating my situation at the moment.

Sincerely,
Lee

No offence taken!

It is just that there is always 2 sides of the mediallion (a known saying here) and that I think the three parties: developers - Servoy - plugin/bean developers need each other to all aim for higher goals (and reach them)…
