"foreign type" property? what is it?

I haven’t been able to figure out, or find a post about the “foreign type” selection in field properties added in 3.5.

What is it for?

What is it for?

You can specify foreign types with it. Eg on a contacts table specify the companyid as the foreign type. Once it know that it will prefill when creating a relation.

Could you explain more please the foreign type concept because if i fill it or not nothing more happens in relation or anywhere else ?

If it’s worth knowing (i.e. people regularly use it to do something useful) then I’d also like to know more about this.
