Hi
With the last few releases of the java jre causing some initial grief with both developers and users of their solutions, I bet that developers get a little nervous (i do) when Sun/Oracle releases a new udated JRE online as to its affect on our solutions.
I believe that Java 7 release is around the corner. Can the servoy team comment on this and release dates of 7? Do you have a pre release version of Java 7 running Servoy? Any major enhancements we should know about that may come with the new JRE?
when the release is of java 7 is until now a big question… At least i still dont know it and i havent read any official statement
the first date that was given was spring 2008 or something!!!
I think now the idea is Q4 of this year.
But until now, they still dont know exactly what is going in i believe, at least until September 2010 they are still going to release milestones with new features, so after that i guess the api is frozen en it will be tested.
So until then the code is in some flux so testing that is not really needed, i will start testing it if they say now we have a api freeze.
Many enhancements Servoy clients will notice are already slowly back ported to java 6 (mostly as experimental features ) those are things like improved hotspot vm and garbage collection (that will make everything faster and snappier at least thats the idea)
Dont think Java Webstart will change a lot because thats more of a separate piece of software, i think that will be quite equal to the latest java 6 release from that time.
Servoy clients will not notice a lot of all the new Api or other stuff, maybe in the plugin world if there would be something nice to use. But the core code base is currently still on java 5 (so not even 6) so before we can make the jump to 7 we will be in 2012 i think…
