Hi, SAN colleagues –
I have begun developing a forum called datatude.network as a sort of blog/forum to cover topics of interest to developers in general, and also to have one persistent place where I can simply post answers to the frequent inquiries I get regarding switching from FMP to Servoy. This way I can stop writing and rewriting my observations, as I’ve been doing when contacted privately by colleagues or prospective Servoy customers.
Please see the “RAD Tools of Choice: FMP or Servoy?” topic at http://network.datatude.net. (The site will look very familiar, because I’ve used the same phpBB software that this site uses … it’s a great tool.) This is a work in progress and I will be announcing it on the general Servoy forum and various email discussion lists when it’s ready for prime time.
I asked Yvo to have a look and he accused me of having a biased opinion – but everything I’ve written up so far really does reflect my professional observations. (Well, since he said that I decided to take out the part that said “Getting FMI to acknowledge bugs is worse than pulling teeth, it’s more like teaching a donkey to fly.” I figured that was not written in very professional tones. I actually had wanted to say “…teach a jackass to fly.”
)
Seriously, I fall very strongly on the Servoy side of the fence … but the whole point of the forum is to welcome challenges, alternative viewpoints, opinions. (So long as they are professionally reasoned and not just propoganda, I hope.)
I’m inviting all of my SAN colleagues - but especially those with a FileMaker history - to have a preview look at the forum, register to participate, and puh-leeze do email me with me any suggestions. (Even if you think the whole idea sucks, please let me know! I have thick skin and am actively seeking feedback here.) And I’ve already pointed one guy to the forum who has already posted a good question. It would be great if someone besides me could answer his Q at at http://network.datatude.net/viewtopic.php?t=9 – will someone add their voice to the forum? TIA!!
Once again: please do not discuss the forum publicly (i.e., outside of this forum or the datatude.network forum) until I have a chance to flesh out some of my “placeholder” topics, re-think a couple of things, and post my own announcement.
Sorry I’ve been so absent lately, many irons in the fire that have required tending …
