Tab panels are way more powerful than portals but sometimes portals are very useful. When you just need to build a simple GUI to let the user pick some values it’s easier to setup a portal that to create a new form just for this purpose. Another example is when you have a contact form and you need to store multiple phone numbers for each contact: it’s easier and faster to use a portal instead of a dedicated form that you will never reuse in your solution.
That’s why I think that portals should remain and be kept up to date.
