I am trying to decide whether to move a database to servoy instead of filemaker7 (I have already done quite a bit of work on filemaker7 rewrite - but am interested in avoiding the workaround dance.
But…
The demo is very quirky:
I try to add fields to forms - nothing happens - than inexplicably I reopen and the forms are there.
Also, I try importing data from a tab delimited file (the only way I can see to transfer data from filemaker) and it says “importing” but nothing is happening.
If this application will work for me - I am ready to make the pitch to the boss - but so far I am dissappointed.
Bob Cusick produced a 145 page step-by-step guide to converting an FM solution to Servoy and I found this an invaluable tool when getting started. Can’t find a link to it at the moment but contact me if you want a copy.
In addition to this forum you’ll find Servoy Magazine http://www.servoymagazine.com/home/ has a lot of tips, articles & movies to get you started.
Welcome to Servoy! There are a number of ways to get data from Filemaker into Servoy. We have used FMPro Migrator to move over data from two large (45-file/table apps with hundreds of thousands of records) successfully. You can check it out at… http://www.fmpromigrator.com.
HJK:
Strange,
first, your are working with an old beta version.
Please update to 2.2RC3 or stick with 2.1.2 final
(2.2 final will be released soon!)
thanks for the help people - my struggles continue
I downloaded:
Servoy Developer
Version R2 2.1.2-build 315
Java version 1.4.1_01-27 (Mac OS X)
I uninstalled the beta version I had - tried to throw the old Servoy folder in the trash - got an error 2 message - but the folder dissappeared (and is not in the trash or anywhere else) -
installed the new version
and now I get the message:
Cannot start repository, it may not exist or is not up-todate
details->
Repository found in database too new for this software version. Repository version: 25, software version: 24. Upgrade Servoy first.
I really want to check this out - sorry if I am being stupid

No, you’re not
But you’re probably trying to use the latest final (2.1.2) with the 2.2 beta repository still running.
Restart your machine and relaunch Servoy 2.1.2: you’ll see it will work

Btw which hardware are you using?
thanks - now it works (I don’t even know what or where a repository is…)
How much time do you think the two day training session in Natick would save a person like me - as opposed to just doing the tutorial and thrashing about. Time really is of the essence - as they want their new improved database - and I need to convince them I can deliver with servoy as opposed to filemaker7 in a timely fashion - I sense that in the long run this is the right way to go (both for my sanity and their business) - but they want it yesterday (last month actually).
this is my hardware - I realize it is just below recommended - but it seems to be working now (except interestingly command A doesn’t select all in the form fields dialog (for one anomoly)

Servoy provides tremendous power and control for developers, but in the initial stages there are some tricky concepts if (like me) most of your recent experience is Filemaker. By taking a course you’ll save countless hours of looking for answers when you’re not even sure what the question is
I started developing Servoy on a Powerbook G4/867 but generally use a WinXP P1.6 because it is sooo much faster.
I too would highly recommend the training course. I presume you have all the books already but if not those are absolutely essential and, by and large, very well done especially considering how much ground they cover. It sounds like you come from a FileMaker background. What is not clear is how much general SQL database knowledge you have. A lot of the scripting/methods, layout/forms stuff is pretty similar I think for those coming from a FileMaker background. The one thing that helps to really get the full advantages of Servoy over FileMaker (whatever version) is to have some SQL knowledge. That isn’t that difficult but will make an enormous difference to your solutions. Having the SQL backend (whatever version - Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL Server, Postgres, MySQL, etc.) brings a whole other level of sophistication, portability, connectivity, scalability and speed to a Servoy solution versus FileMaker.
As to the platform Macs do work very well with Servoy but for any serious development (as opposed to a client) I would absolutely recommend having a G5. The problem is in developing on any other Mac you will get frustrated and often think that Servoy and/or the back end database is what is slow. That isn’t the case but older Macs using Servoy developer are not a good solution. I use a G5 though and have no speed problems at all.
