The Sybase website is a disaster. Products seem to change names as you dig in and then you get white papers mixed with bug reports. What Sybase offerings are potentially useful to Servoy developers? Where can we learn more about these products? What are the licensing costs and implications? If anyone is really tuned into the Sybase product line and can shed some light on these questions, many of us would be greatful.
The following is from iAnywhere and marginally helpful. At least now I know that Sybase’s iAnywhere produces the SQL Anywhere database which includes the Adaptive Server Anywhere (ASA) database. Good products but challenging naming.
iAnywhere is a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc. We provide software and services that enable the delivery of enterprise information anywhere, at anytime. iAnywhere has more than 12,000 customers and 1,000 partners worldwide that rely on the companys flagship product, SQL Anywhere studio (database) along with our mobile enterprise solutions. In addition, the companys AvantGo mobile Internet service has more than ten million registered subscribers. Our web site can be viewed at: www.ianywhere.com.
SQL Anywhere is a database solution that can be used in a workgroups environment or a mobile environment, or both. In a workgroups environment, such as a small business office, employees can access the central database (called Adaptive Server Anywhere, or ASA) using desktop computers or laptops. A client (or network seat) would be used for each desktop computer to access the database.
If you were to have many offices, the ASA database can still be used at each office location, with one being designated the main database. Our synchronization software, called MobiLink, would be used to synchronize all the databases to the main database.
In a mobile environment, a local database can be stored on each device. This local database is called Personal Database for laptops, and UltraLite for PDAs. The laptops and PDAs can be synchronized, using MobiLink, to the main database either wirelessly or through cradle synch.
More details on the this product, including whitepapers, datasheets, success stories, manuals, and more can be found at: http://www.ianywhere.com/products/sql_anywhere.html. You can also download a copy of the developers edition of the software for free from the same site.
Here is a nice link describing the iAnywhere database products we are likely interested in.
