Sybase OS X configuration

Hi,

I am going to change from MySQL for my solutions to Sybase, given that it seems to be the supported bundled backend database with Servoy.

I am running on OS X intel X server (Quad dual core - it rocks!).

I have a few questions:

  1. If i install the full version of sybase from their website, does this overwrite the database installed in the bundled servoy application.
  2. Is their any good documentation on installing servoy server and sybase as an automatically running service on boot on OS X.
  3. In trying to get Sybase Central to manage my database, it says it is free, but then when i download it seems to only be a 60 day trial licence?

Thanks in Advance

(and if any of you US Servoy users have got your hands on an iPhone last night then kindly post one to the UK for me. it a long time until Chirstmas!!!)

David

Hello David,

Hopefully these answers can help you out.

  1. No - Servoy installs SQL Anywhere in its own folder, called “sybase_db”. When Servoy starts, it automatically starts the engine and loads the repository database. You can change this if you want by editing the Servoy preferences under DB Servers.

An install of Servoy and SQL Anywhere (from our Sybase iAnywhere web site) on the same machine won’t interfere with each other.

  1. Yes, this should be possible by creating a service that gets started when the machine boots. I haven’t tried this but I believe it’s possible, as we’ve done it for Linux (you can find that info here, in case you’re interested: http://www.ianywhere.com/developer/technotes/linux_start_up.html). Basically all you need to do is provide the correct start command to run the db server.

  2. You are running the Evaluation Edition of Sybase Central. When you first install it, it will ask you to provide a registration key that you can obtain for free from our web site - this makes your copy a “Developer Edition” that does not expire. If you do not enter a key, then the software becomes a 60-day eval.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.
